CHAPTER TEN

She spent the next day primarily alone. First thing in the morning he’d armed her with another tray of junk food and beverages, informing her that he was going to procur the items on her list. Even though she hadn’t enjoyed being left all alone, it hadn’t bothered her as much as before. Because this time he’d taken the time to communicate his plans with her.

Knowing that he’d be gone for hours, she’d even felt relaxed enough to take a long luxurious bubble bath. The warm soak had done wonders to soothe her aching and bruised body and the orange bath gels and shampoo had smelled so delicious that she’d almost wanted to eat the suds to see if they tasted half as good as they smelled.

She’d walked about the room for awhile, trying to get her strength back but she had tired quickly and napped for most of the day. The sound of the key in the lock had awakened her on his arrival. She bolted upright in bed, drawn in by the heavenly fragrance of freshly baked bread. She couldn’t resist checking him out. He cut a dramatic form, backlit as he was by the lights in the room behind him. He wasn’t straining at all, even weighed down as he was with several boxes and a large white bag. She instantly deduced that the bag was where all the mouthwatering smells were originating from, and her eyes rested on it hungrily.

He deposited everything in the corner and ducked quickly out of the room, all without uttering so much as a syllable. He was definitely a man of few words. Before her face could contort into an agitated grimace he was back sporting a couple of folding chairs and a TV tray. Like everything else she’d seen so far they were comprised of beautifully carved wood. She doubted there was a piece of cheap plastic furniture in the whole house.

There was so much food in the bag that she suspected they’d be eating leftovers for days. That was fine by her. It was Italian which was hands down her favorite cuisine. He began opening containers and spreading them out on the TV tray but there was no way it was all going to fit so he spread the rest out on the bed.

“I didn’t know what you liked,” he said by way of an explanation, spreading his hands out to encompass the feast.

“It all looks amazing,” she said trying not to drool as she accepted the fork and the empty plate he handed her.

He stood there silently studying her, his own countenance hidden carefully behind the mask. She had no idea what he was thinking but for a brief moment she felt like he’d rather eat her than spaghetti. As hot as the notion was it also caused her to feel incredibly self conscious.

She dipped her fork in the nearest container and began loading up her plate. She was thrilled to see that he’d ordered
